Start Stop Batteries

The battery is the heart of the car’s electrical system. It takes care of powering the lights, the wipers and all the optional services of the vehicle, especially when the alternator is not in operation, or with the vehicle off.
However, the main function of the batteries remains that of starting the engine. Each time the engine is started, the battery delivers a considerable amount of electrical energy. While in normal vehicles this is generally only done once, in cars with Start and Stop technology there will be a greater expenditure of energy. Here then is that a normal battery will no longer be suitable.

It will therefore be necessary to consider a battery for start and stop.

Batteries for start and stop. Why is it needed?

Cars not equipped with start and stop technology are turned on only once. Once started, the alternator will power the electrical systems, with great savings on the use of the battery. In the case of start and stop, however, the situation is quite different. The battery is subjected here to much greater efforts, numerous starts and stops, without considering that in the shutdown phases, the various wipers, the car radio, the lighting and the various displays will rely on the battery.
To meet these new needs, innovative batteries have been devised, able to sustain much more efficiently the short journeys dotted with many starts and stops. The two most used technologies are EFB and AGM. While the first can be considered as the enhanced version of the traditional battery, the second is based on different procedures, which guarantee greater efficiency and duration.

Characteristics of batteries with EFB technology

This is the evolution of normal batteries, they are suitable for vehicles with basic start and stop systems, or for vehicles that are very equipped but are not equipped with a start and stop system.

  • Longer Life Cycle: The polyester cover added on top of the positive plate extends the life cycle of EFB batteries. Furthermore, it doubles the number of discharge cycles before exhaustion.

Characteristics of batteries with AGM technology

AGM batteries are ideal for vehicles with a large number of accessories which in consequence, require a particular electricity requirement. In addition to an overall better efficiency, they offer various energy recovery systems, to ensure a longer duration over time.

  • Optimized cold start: even in the case of low temperatures, these batteries are able to guarantee immediate ignition.
  • Optimized charge balance: unlike normal batteries, which must maintain a high charge level to be efficient, the new AGM versions are able to give the right boost even with partial charge. This also allows for the accumulation of new energy from various alternative sources, such as braking energy.
  • Higher reserve capacity: it is used to guarantee the correct operation of the electrical system. As mentioned above, in fact, cars with start and stop technology require a much greater electrical requirement. That is why the reserve capacities of the special stop and start batteries will also be maximized.
  • Robustness: they are compact, very resistant to mechanical stress and so resistant that they can also be used for military purposes. They can be mounted in any position and can also be used at high altitudes or in the sea, managing best in high temperatures.
  • Safety and maintenance: in case of breakage of the container, in fact, the acid leakage is limited; Furthermore, thanks to the division of the glass fiber plates, there is no danger of a short circuit between one cell and another. These batteries are maintenance-free and have an average lifespan of 10 years.
